There is a lot of interest in hand carving spoons.

This data sheet lists a range of tools and equipment of particular use for this pursuit.

  • A hatchet is useful to rough out blanks of wood - SEE HERE
  • An rapid adjust clamp or two allows the blank to be held - SEE HERE
  • A coping saw allows you to cut the spoon blank from the hewn plank - SEE HERE
  • A draw knife can help with roughing the shape - SEE HERE
  • A honing stone keeps the draw knife and chisels sharp - SEE HERE
  • A couple of bent carving tools helps with hollowing the bowl of the spoon - note that the radius of the gouges - known as the sweep - must suit the curvature of the spoons bowl i.e the tool must be more swept than the intended spoon so select the tool for the radius of the spoon- SEE HERE
  • A carving mallet helps to work more quickly - SEE HERE
  • There are spoon knives specially made for hollowing the bowl of the spoon- SEE HERE
  • There are numerous carving tool options for working the spoon surfaces other than inside the bowl- SEE HERE
  • A swan neck cabinet scraper is an excellent option to smooth the bowl and in fact all surfaces of the spoon- SEE HERE
  • A burnisher is an essential tool to keep the scraper cutting- SEE HERE
